Event Type

“Good Evening.” With those signature, dramatically enunciated words, ’50s and ’60s TV viewers were introduced to that master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Prior to this popular TV series, Hitchcock was the director of early silver screen gems. This course will view and discuss some of these masterpieces which demonstrated Hitchcock’s nascent flair for mystery and irony, while illuminating the darker side of the human psyche and evoking primal fears in viewers. These film classics also served as showcases for the burgeoning talents of actors such as Laurence Olivier, Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine, and Ingrid Bergman, among others.  Included will be: The 39 Steps, Notorious, Suspicion, Spellbound, Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt, subject to availability.

Instructor: Richard Monastra is a native of South Philadelphia with a BA in American History from LaSalle University and a MS in Economics from Drexel University, with graduate work in American History at Temple University. In addition to teaching those subjects in high school and college classes for 42 years, he has taught other social studies courses in PA and NJ.
