This course will focus on the residents of Historic Hope Lodge in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania from 1740 to 1865 and explore their roles in the economic, political, and military history of Philadelphia and the United States. Topics will include Samuel Morris’ involvement in colonial Philadelphia’s economy and Quaker community; William West’s role in Native American affairs during the French and Indian War; Hope Lodge’s place in the Continental Army’s Whitemarsh Encampment and Philadelphia Campaign of 1777; Members of the Wentz and Watmough families in the Pennsylvania Militia, US Army, and Navy during the American War for Independence, War of 1812, Mexican/American War, and American Civil War.

Instructor: Jeffrey LaMonica is Associate Professor of History and Global Studies Program Coordinator at DCCC and is Site Coordinator of Historic Hope Lodge.
